What is a Free School? – The Woods

What is a Free School?

The Free School movement began in America in the late 1960’s/early 1970’s as an alternative to the top-down, passive-learning, largely didactic experiences that were offered in the public domain.  Families who wanted a more active role in nurturing their children chose a more egalitarian approach, with a Free School, where collectivism, self-reliance, and mutual support were pillars of a foundation created by a non-authoritarian body of elders.
